5 Reasons a Dredd 3D Sequel Must Happen

When asked about a follow up to last summer's Dredd 3D, star Karl Urban was quoted saying:

"Interestingly enough, I did have breakfast with Alex Garland this morning.  It’s not off the agenda.  Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it.  It’s entirely possible, and if people want to see another installment then they should be vocal about that, because, it can happen.  The power of fandom can resurrect projects.  In fact, that’s what happened with Star Trek.  They weren’t going to do a third season until fans did a letter writing campaign and they continued that series."

Dredd 3D was personally my favorite movie of the year, and I enjoyed it much more than The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, and have rewatched it many more times than either. However, Dredd did not rake in the money like these two comic book films did, so a sequel is no guarantee as of right now. So, today I'm here to show you why a Dredd 3D sequel is a must.

5. All Are Welcome

One thing that Dredd succeeded in (and something many comic book films fail to succeed in) was that it very easily welcomed non-comic book readers into the Dredd universe, while at the same time stayed true to hardcore fans. What makes it even better is that this wasn't an origin story. It's easy to appeal to everyone by simply starting from the very beginning, but the fact that Dredd did this without making it about his backstory was truly unique in the best way.

4. More Mutants

Personally, I usually can't stand when a bad-ass character is dragged down in a movie by an obnoxious sidekick. Most of the time, this sidekick is highly annoying and unlikable. In Dredd, however, Judge Anderson was an amazing character that didn't fall victim to all the shortcomings usually attached to a sidekick. She was highly likable and even bad-ass in her own way, and did not, by any means, bring Dredd down in any way. She also introduced the fact that there are mutants in the Dredd universe. Dredd in confronted by mutants many times in the comics, and seeing them expanded upon in the next film would be awesome.

3. The Dreddverse

Speaking of expanding upon things, the universe of Judge Dredd is both enormous and incredibly interesting. Within Mega-City One are thousands of stories including the Robot Wars and the Cry of the Werewolf, but the stories expand past the boundaries of the enormous cityscape. There's the Cursed Earth stories including the Judge Child saga. There are stories in other parts of the world as well, such as Dredd's trip to Ireland in the Emerald Isle arc or his journey to Egypt in Book of the Dead.

2. Karl Urban is Dredd

If there was one thing about Dredd that stood out the most, it was the amazing performance by Karl Urban. His embodiment of the ultimate lawman was so perfect that anyone else playing Dredd would always be walking in Urban's shadow. Most of all, Urban respected the fact that Dredd does not remove his helmet, and thus kept the iconic helmet on for the entirety of the film. Karl Urban's Judge Dredd was so good that seeing him in the role once again is reason enough for a sequel to happen.

1. Judge Death

There's no denying it: Judge Death is one of the coolest characters of all time. Judge Death and the other Dark Judges believe that life itself is the ultimate crime, and their mission is to wipe out all life on earth. The Dark Judges come from a parallell dimension to Mega-City One, where they face Dredd and Anderson. Seeing Judge Death on film would be a fanboy's dream come true, and is something that must happen in a a future Dredd film.
