5 Reasons Star Trek Is Better Than Star Wars

There's no denying that this is the biggest rivalry in the entire world of science-fiction. While I don't see why a television show is always compared to a series of films, I've decided to give both arguments of this decade-long debate a shot. For the 5 Reasons Star Wars Is Better Than Star Trek, click here.

5. Social Impact

While it may have been super popular in its day, Star Wars has never had the social impact that Star Trek did.  Star Trek is often credited with the first interracial kiss in television history, and was revolutionary with its multi-ethnic crew, while Star Wars is not exactly known for its diversity.

4. Writing

When it really comes down to it, Star Wars has never had the superb storytelling and character development that Star Trek had. Plenty of Star Wars fans will tell you that the series is boring due to the drama, but this is what sets Star Trek apart from all of the science fiction films that predated it, which were often campy and too unbelievable due to careless writing and bad acting. Of course, Star Wars has a fantastic story, but it is deeply riddled with big plot holes that can sometimes be hard to overlook, and fairly static characters (with the exception of Luke).

3. A Much Better Universe

While there are some gems like the novel Death Troopers, the Star Wars extended universe is, for the most part, a complete joke. Giving an in-depth backstory to every single character ever glanced on camera is an attempt to deepen and liven up a universe, but it just ends up coming off as silly and pointless. Star Trek has its fair share of novels and stories extending the world, however, the entire universe conceived on the show is far superior to the shoddy Star Wars extended universe created through fan fiction.

2. Prequels

One of the biggest things that Trekkies can hold over Star Wars fans is the three prequel films which, as we all know, did not live up to everything they could've been. While episodes of Deep Space Nine and The Next Generation sometimes go backwards in time, the original series does not have a true sub-par prequel like the Star Wars films. J.J. Abrams' Star Trek film served as a prequel to the original series, and was far superior to any of the Star Wars prequels. With Star Trek: Into Darkness coming soon, it looks like Star Trek fans may have yet another good sequel to put them ahead of Star Wars.

1. The Fans

There are tons of die-hard Star Wars fans in the world, but the majority of the fanbase could be called casual at best. On the other hand, real Star Trek fans eat, sleep and breathe Star Trek. The casual fans are the minority when it comes to Star Trek, while most Trekkies (or Trekkers) devote their whole lives to the incredible world of the series. The most hardcore Star Wars fans will never even come close to the level of commitment of the most extreme Star Trek fans.
