5 Reasons Star Wars Is Better Than Star Trek

There's no denying that this is the biggest rivalry in the entire world of science-fiction. While I don't see why a television show is constantly compared to a series of films, I've decided to give both arguments of this decade-long debate a shot. For the 5 Reasons Star Trek Is Better Than Star Wars, click here.

5. Social Acceptance

There's no denying it, being a Star Wars fan is much more socially acceptable than being a Trekkie in recent years. Telling someone you like Star Wars is the same as telling someone you like The Walking Dead; who doesn't these days? Star Wars is also the go-to place for people who just watched The Big Bang Theory and want to release their inner "nerd" without finding new friends. Despite a fairly popular reboot from J.J. Abrams (who will be taking on Star Wars next), Star Trek still hasn't reached the level of global acceptance as Star Wars.

4. Budget & Special Effects

One thing that Star Wars will always have is a bigger budget than Star Trek. There's no comparing the sub-par special effects of the low budget original Star Trek show with the blockbuster Star Wars battles and space scenes. This isn't because of more effort being put into Star Wars, it's just that Star Trek never had the money that Star Wars has and always will have (especially with Disney purchasing it recently), and it shows, especially in an age of CGI.

3. Iconic Characters

If you were to ask a random person, there's a much better chance they could tell you what Princess Leia looks like than who Lt. Uhura is. While many people could point out main characters like Spock, there's no denying that Star Wars has characters that people recognize even if they've never seen a single film.

2. Genre Blending

One of the best things about Star Wars is how it blends westerns, fantasy, and science fiction in each film. It takes heroes based on western archetypes, integrates a mystical force into the story, and puts it all in a universe surrounded by intergalactic unrest and battles in space, what could be better?

1. Action

The biggest complaint I've heard from Star Wars fans about Star Trek is that it's "all talking". While that is clearly not true, Star Wars is a much more action-packed series for those who'd rather see blaster fights and space battles. Going back to what I said before about the budget, the fight scenes in Star Wars are also far superior to those of the original Star Trek both in space and during lightsaber duels.
