Hellboy: In Hell #1 and #2

Series creator Mike Mignola has spoken about the death of Hellboy for a while, even hinting at the death of the character being adapted to complete Guillermo Del Toro's film trilogy. Now, the moment has finally come, Hellboy lies dead after defeated the dragon, but is he really gone?

The short answer is no, Hellboy is most certainly not done yet, but just where is his journey taking him now? Hellboy's past has haunted him for the entirety of the series, but now, as he returns to where it all began, he can no longer avoid it.
Hellboy: In Hell is a pretty self explanatory title, but this isn't just going to be Hellboy running around the underworld punching demons into oblivion. From these first two issues, it seems like Hellboy: In Hell may be the darkest Hellboy story to date. It reads like a combination of Dante's Inferno and A Christmas Carol, with Hellboy being guided through hell by strange specters who show him what he was born to do, and what his birth really meant.
If this story was to be brought to the screen by Del Toro, I would expect it to leave all of the slapstick humor of the first two films behind in favor of a truly dark atmosphere. I really think that this has the potential to be a character-defining saga for Hellboy, like Seed of Destruction was way back when. Mike Mignola has continuously pumped out great story after great story when it comes to Hellboy, and is a writer who can always be trusted to really entertain the reader, so I know that this story is not one to miss.
This is a book that I'm really excited to continue reading, and one that I definitely recommend for all Hellboy fans. I know that I'll be picking up Issue #3 as soon as it is released. Hellboy: In Hell #1 and #2 get 5 out of 5 Rob Liefeld Biceps
