Judge Dredd #1 (2012)

With the recent release of the film Dredd 3D, it's not surprising that some new comics would be on the way, and Duane Swierczynski brings us the first one.

One of the best things about Judge Dredd is that you can pick up any storyline and understand and enjoy it without worrying about past arcs or origins or anything like that. Judge Dredd appears in the comic book equivalent of short stories, so his canon is similar to that of Sherlock Holmes, meaning that all you really need to know is the very basics. This also means that any writer/artist can pick up the character and roll with him for a while before someone else comes along and changes things up, so Judge Dredd can potentially go on forever (which of course would be great).
This new arc will be dealing with robots. Robots have always been a part of Mega-City One, so Dredd has dealt with them before, and is not exactly a fan, going so far as quitting the force when he was not allowed to destroy all hi-grade robots, an action that would have prevented the giant Robot Wars story arc.
Issue #1 has Dredd, among other judges, responding to a call about a mass outbreak of looting and destruction after a robotically enhanced tree goes haywire. As the story progresses, there are hints that a group of strange and rebellious robots are behind the attack, and will soon be facing Dredd himself.
As a huge fan of Judge Dredd, I'm excited to see where this story goes, and look forward to picking up Issue #2 next month. This is also a new story aimed at capturing those people who were interested in the film, so if you've never read Dredd before, this may be a good time to dive in. Judge Dredd #1 gets 4 out of 5 Rob Liefeld Biceps.
